Herbie The Love Bug
Over the years, I’ve seen many “top 10 movie car” lists. Some are pretty cool, some aren’t. So I put together my list of the top 15 movie/tv cars that I remember the most growing up and that I think are pretty cool. Let me know if I left any others out.

1. Easily the most famous movie car of all time, Herbie, from Disneys “Herbie The Love Bug“. Herbie is a L87 pearl white 1963 Model 117 Volkswagen Type 1 Deluxe Sunroof with yellow-on-black California license plates OFP 857.

2. The General Lee, a 1969 Dodge Charger from “The Dukes Of Hazzard” series and movie. And long before the Dukes Of Hazzard, there was the Dodge Charger RT 440 from the movie “Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry“.

3. “The Car“. The evil car in the film was a customized 1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III designed by famed customizer George Barris who designed the The Munsters’ Munster Koach and the Batmobile used in the 1966 television series Batman.

4. Speaking of “Batman”, the original Batmobile. Originally it started off as a $250,000 1955 Ford Lincoln Futura concept car.

5. De Lorean 1981 DMC-12 from the movie “Back To The Future”. See it here!

6. “Starsky & Hutch” 1974 Ford Gran Torino. Such a drab car that looks so cool. See one here!

7. “Mad Max” 1975 (Australian built) Ford Falcon Interceptor. Far from the street model, this was one badass car. See it here!

8. “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. If you remember this one, you’re showing your age. It had a distinctive look and a distintive sound and all kinds of gadgets. So what kind of car was Chitty? The final product weighed approximately 2 tons, was 17 feet long, and built on a custom made ladder frame chassis. It was named and registered as GEN11. Find out more about it here!

9. Eleanor from the movie “Gone In 60 Seconds”. Eleanor is a 1967 Mustang Shelby GT500. She is sweet! See one here!

10. K.I.T.T. from the t.v. series Knight Rider. KITT, short for “Knight Industries Two Thousand” started life as a 1982 Pontiac Trans Am. Learn more here.

11. The “Ghostbusters” Car. It’s a converted 1959 Cadillac Ambulance with lots of bells and whistles. Easy recognized anywhere it goes. Check it out here!

12. Christine, from the movie “Christine”. Christine is a beautiful 1958 Plymouth Fury. Known as the anti-Herbie. Check her out here!

13. The Monkee Mobile from the t.v. series “The Monkees”. General Motors furnished NBC with two 1966 Pontiac GTO convertibles, provided that the words ‘Pontiac’ or ‘GTO’ appeared on the finished vehicle. Read more about it here!

14. “Corvette Summer”. Man, what people can do to a 1973 C3 Corvette. I remember being 12 years old and falling in love with this car. Look at it here!

15. Ban 1, a 1977 Pontiac Trans Am from the movie “Smokey And The Bandit”. Probably the famous Trans Am that ever existed. Learn more about it here!

Edit 2/24/08: I forgot about the Turbo Interceptor , a Dodge M4S in “The Wraith”. That was one badass looking car. Follow the link to find out where the car is now!

You forgot VIPER… I loved that tv show even though it only lasted 1 season.

I actually thought about that one. There was also one called “Stealth” that didn’t last very long either.

Batman’s car wouldn’t have needed the twin parachutes on a 25 foot nylon cord if he had antilock brakes, like my old van has.
